Scandiano launches extreme‑heat action plan

The municipality of Scandiano (Italy) has adopted a “Piano Caldo Estremo” to protect residents during extreme heat. The plan follows ARPAE bioclimatic alerts monitored daily until 15 September and outlines alert levels, responsibilities, actions and timelines.

Its core is a network of climate shelters – the Salvemini Library, Made centre’s youth and coworking spaces, and local clubs – offering air‑conditioned rooms during the hottest hours. Outdoor markets will host Red Cross and Civil Protection stations with fans and fresh water, and a public water dispenser supplied by IREN will be installed at the entrance to Parco della Resistenza.

Special attention is given to children: nurseries, kindergartens and 18 summer centres will receive portable air‑conditioners and ceiling fans, with a goal to equip all 0‑6 year‑old schools with permanent cooling. In the medium term the town will map urban heat islands, de‑pave parking areas, add new greenery and shading to reduce long‑term heat exposure.
