Scandlines invests in major modernization of Schleswig-Holstein ferry

Scandlines has sent its double-ended ferry, the ‘Schleswig-Holstein’, to a shipyard in Klaipėda, Lithuania, for an extensive modernization program. The project, valued at approximately 25 million to 30 million euros, aims to extend the vessel's economic lifespan and upgrade its technical capabilities.

A primary focus of the renovation is converting the ship from a hybrid ferry to a plug-in hybrid. This involves installing larger battery capacities and modern charging systems to allow the vessel to operate primarily using shore power. This technical upgrade is supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.

In addition to propulsion changes, the passenger areas on decks 5 and 6 will undergo a complete redesign. The works include removing partitions, relocating staircases, and creating new dining, café, and shopping zones. The redesign also features an outdoor area with a playground and digital ordering systems to optimize passenger flow during the 45-minute crossing. During the shipyard stay, the Rødby-Puttgarden route will be serviced by the remaining four ferries in the Scandlines fleet.
