Scandlines ferry hybrid conversion

The Scandlines ferry M/F Schleswig-Holstein is undergoing a major conversion to a plug-in-hybrid vessel. Following its final passenger trips in August 2026, the ship has been sent to a shipyard in Klaipėda, Lithuania, for an extensive modernization program valued at approximately 25 million to 30 million euros.

The technical upgrades, supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, involve installing larger battery capacities and modern charging systems. These improvements will allow the vessel to draw the majority of its energy from shore-based electricity while in port.

Beyond propulsion, the vessel’s passenger areas on decks 5 and 6 will undergo a complete redesign. This includes removing partitions, relocating staircases, and creating new dining, café, and shopping zones. The renovation also features an outdoor area with a playground and digital ordering systems to optimize passenger flow during the 45-minute crossing.

The M/F Schleswig-Holstein is expected to return to the Rødby-Puttgarden route in late 2026. During its time in the shipyard, the route will continue to be serviced by the remaining ferries in the Scandlines fleet.
