Scania completes first Megawatt Charging System session in Italy

Scania has successfully completed its first Megawatt Charging System (MCS) session in Italy using a Scania 40 R electric truck. The testing took place along the Brenner corridor at two strategic locations: the A22 Bolzano South motorway exit, operated by Autostrada del Brennero, and a station in Varna near Bressanone, developed by Ide2n and operated by kostner SERVICE STATIONS.

The MCS technology is designed to facilitate long-haul electric transport by providing significantly higher power than the current CCS2 standard. During the test, the Scania 40 R achieved a maximum charging power of 750 kW at up to 1,000 amps, compared to the 375 kW limit of CCS2. This high-power capability allows the vehicle to gain approximately 400 km of range in about 30 minutes, aligning charging times with mandatory driver breaks.

Fredrik Swartling, CEO of Scania Italy, noted that the successful implementation confirms the necessity of a systemic approach, where high-performance vehicles must work in tandem with advanced, reliable infrastructure. The test also demonstrated compatibility with Alpitronic charging systems already operating in Italy.
