Electric heavy-duty charging infrastructure expansion
Overview
Developments in high-power charging infrastructure for electric heavy-duty transport are progressing along the Brenner corridor, a key transit route connecting Germany and Italy.
Scania successfully completed its first Megawatt Charging System (MCS) session in Italy using a Scania 40 R electric truck. Testing conducted at locations in Bolzano and Varna demonstrated a maximum charging power of 750 kW, allowing the vehicle to gain roughly 400 km of range in approximately 30 minutes. This test confirmed compatibility with existing Alpitronic charging systems.
Concurrently, OMV and Siemens eMobility launched the first commercial application of the SICHARGE FLEX charging system at an OMV station in Kufstein, Austria. The initial phase provides DC charging points for passenger cars and trucks with capacities up to 400 kW. A planned expansion will introduce four additional truck charging points utilizing the Megawatt Charging Standard, capable of delivering between 600 kW and 1.2 MW to align charging times with mandatory driver breaks.
