Scania invests £70m in R&D facility amid Q3 revenue growth

Scania has inaugurated a new SEK 975 million (approximately £70 million) research and development proving ground at its headquarters in Södertälje, Sweden. The 85-hectare facility features 13 kilometres of paved roads and four kilometres of gravel tracks, designed to accelerate the development of electric trucks, autonomous transport systems, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

By bringing testing in-house, Scania aims to increase engineering control and reduce reliance on external facilities. The site includes dedicated zones for simulating real traffic and evaluating safety technologies such as automatic emergency braking and lane support.

This investment coincides with Scania’s third-quarter financial results, which showed a 5% increase in sales revenue to SEK 49.1 billion. While overall order intake fell by 2%, the company reported growth in its services business and a significant rise in battery-electric vehicle orders, which climbed to 511 units compared to 133 in the same period last year.
