Scania launches biometane‑powered city bus in São Paulo
Scania, in partnership with Brazil's Caio, has built a K280 4×2 low‑floor city bus that runs on compressed natural gas and biomethane. The vehicle is in the final stages of homologation with SPTrans and is slated for real‑world demonstration trials in São Paulo beginning in September, supporting the municipal climate plan that targets a carbon‑free bus fleet by 2038.
At the same event Scania presented its new Super diesel engine family for buses, comprising 11‑liter models delivering 350–430 hp and 13‑liter versions with 460–500 hp. The Super line promises up to 8% better fuel efficiency than the previous generation and reflects a US$2 billion global investment, including over R$1 billion spent in Brazil. Scania executives say biomethane can expand more quickly than electric buses in areas where the electricity grid is insufficient, highlighting Brazil’s ample waste‑derived feedstock for biomethane production.
