Scarlett Salice remains missing six years after Black Forest disappearance

Scarlett Salice, 26, remains missing six years after she disappeared while hiking in the Southern Black Forest. She was last seen on supermarket surveillance footage in Todtmoos during the final stage of a hiking tour on the Schluchtensteig trail.

Her father and a network of volunteers continue to search the region. Psychologist Elif Gündüz of the Federal Association of German Psychologists (BDP) notes that such disappearances are uniquely devastating for parents. Unlike a confirmed death, the lack of closure creates a painful oscillation between hope and fear, as giving up hope can feel like abandoning the child.

According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), approximately 9,100 people were reported missing in Germany at the start of the year. While most cases are resolved within a month, only about three percent of missing persons remain unaccounted for after more than one year.
