Disappearance of Scarlett Salice in Black Forest

Six years after Scarlett Salice, 26, disappeared while hiking the Schluchtensteig trail in the Southern Black Forest, investigations into physical evidence and the psychological drivers of the case continue.

Authorities are currently analyzing a zipper discovered by private volunteers in a dried-up riverbed of the Wehra. While initial forensic checks regarding the item’s size and teeth did not yield a definitive match or exclusion, the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) is conducting further fabric analysis to determine if it matches the model of Salice’s backpack. To facilitate this, the ‘Please find Scarlett’ initiative provided an original, unopened backpack of the same model. Due to the prioritization of recent criminal cases, officials expect results to take several weeks.

Private volunteers from the association ‘Finderwille’ recently conducted a search using approximately a dozen tracking dogs. The dogs alerted to scents near the Wildensteinfelsen, though experts noted this area is off the main trail where Salice was last seen and expressed skepticism regarding scent persistence after six years.

As the search continues, Salice’s father, Ralf Salice, has shared personal reflections on his daughter. He described her as an organized, social, and travel-loving individual who had recently returned from a trip to Asia due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her last known location was recorded by surveillance cameras at a supermarket in Todtmoos.

The case maintains high public visibility. Psychologist Elif Gündüz of the Federal Association of German Psychologists (BDP) notes that such disappearances are uniquely devastating for parents, as the lack of closure creates a ‘painful oscillation between hope and fear.’
