Jens Härtel resigns as Union Berlin U19 coach

Jens Härtel has resigned from his position as the U19 youth coach for 1. FC Union Berlin following allegations of discriminatory remarks made during training sessions. The resignation follows a motion by the DFB Control Committee to impose a multi-week ban on the 57-year-old coach.

The allegations originated from an anonymous letter sent to the club. While Union Berlin noted that no personally affected individuals had come forward through the club’s internal or external reporting channels, the club has sanctioned Härtel for his conduct.

Härtel issued a statement apologizing to his team, the coaching staff, and the club, stating, “I have made mistakes and have not lived up to my role as a role model in the youth sector.” He has informed the club that he will step away from coaching for the time being to focus on personal reflection.
