Union Berlin U19 coach resignation and discrimination case

Overview

Jens Härtel, the U19 youth coach for 1. FC Union Berlin, resigned following allegations of discriminatory remarks. The situation developed after the German Football Association (DFB) Control Committee moved to impose a 12-week suspension on the 57-year-old coach.

Specific allegations included an incident during a training camp in Opalenica, Poland, where Härtel reportedly asked players of Cameroonian and Guinean descent if they were sitting at an ‘African table’. Härtel described the phrasing as ‘unwise and counterproductive’ but denied intending to personally insult the players. Further allegations involved comments regarding a defeat against Berliner AK, where Härtel reportedly suggested his team ‘lost to a club of foreigners’.

Härtel issued an apology to his team and the club, stating, “I have made mistakes and have not lived up to my role as a role model in the youth sector.” While Union Berlin noted that no personally affected individuals had utilized official reporting channels, the club sanctioned Härtel for his conduct.
