Schillaci proposes higher wages and new hires for Italian healthcare staff

Italian Health Minister Orazio Schillaci has announced plans to prioritize new hires, higher wages, and more uniform treatment regarding overtime and allowances for healthcare professionals in the upcoming budget maneuver. Schillaci emphasized the importance of utilizing available healthcare funds effectively to strengthen the sector.

Healthcare organizations have responded to these proposals. Pierino Di Silverio, national secretary of Anaao Assomed, welcomed the signal to value medical and healthcare management economically but urged the Ministry of Economy and Finance to ensure concrete follow-through. He noted that without structural measures to make the profession attractive, public recruitment efforts may continue to fail due to staff demotivation.

Gianluca Giuliano, National Secretary of UGL Salute, also expressed support for the Minister’s intentions regarding resources and prevention. However, he called for a definitive shift in addressing salaries and workplace safety, highlighting the need to protect operators from daily aggression in hospitals and emergency rooms. Giuliano also stressed that resources must lead to stable hiring and the functional implementation of community health centers.
