Netherlands labor strikes hit Schiphol Airport and social security
Labor unrest is escalating in the Netherlands, marked by security staff work stoppages at Schiphol Airport and planned large-scale protests against social security cuts.
Security personnel at Schiphol are conducting short, scheduled work interruptions on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest high workloads and staffing changes. While Schiphol reported that actual wait times remained around twenty minutes despite digital boards suggesting longer delays, unions warn that further actions could cause significant passenger disruptions. The disputes stem from the airport reducing its security providers from five to three, which unions claim has increased pressure and sickness rates.
Simultaneously, the FNV, CNV, and VCP unions have organized a series of strikes against government plans to cut 6.5 billion euros from social security. On September 8, thousands of government employees, including those from municipalities, universities, and the national government, are scheduled to protest in The Hague. Other planned actions include strikes in the ports on September 4 and in public transport on September 9.
