School transport safety measures implemented in Slovenia and Croatia

Authorities in Slovenia and Croatia are implementing measures to ensure student safety ahead of the new school year.

In the Municipality of Velenje, Slovenia, school transport routes are being adjusted to accommodate road closures caused by major investments and repairs. In Podkraju, a landslide repair has necessitated temporary road openings exclusively for school buses, with 40-seat vehicles replacing standard 50-seat models due to narrow passages. Other adjustments include relocated stops in Kavče and Škale due to bridge construction and landslide remediation. The municipality has allocated over one million euros for school transport this year and plans to spend over 1.04 million euros in 2026, while also installing new active and passive bus warning signs.

In Croatia, the Osijek-Baranja County Police Administration and the Croatian Vehicle Center (CVH) are conducting a preventive safety campaign titled ‘Days of Technical Correctness of Buses for School Children’s Transport’. From August 30 to September 5, 2026, buses used for organized student transport will undergo free technical and safety inspections at authorized stations. This initiative aims to ensure vehicles meet required standards without imposing sanctions for identified faults, serving as a preventive measure rather than a replacement for regular inspections.
