School zone traffic accidents increase in September

Data analysis from the Portál nehod project reveals that the start of the school year brings a significant increase in traffic accidents. In September, the number of accidents rises by ten percent compared to the monthly average throughout the year.

Between 2010 and 2025, 76,022 accidents occurred within a 100-meter radius of 9,833 schools and kindergartens. While the majority of these incidents involve vehicle collisions or cyclists, collisions with pedestrians account for approximately six percent of all accidents. However, pedestrian accidents are notably more severe; while 82.5 percent of all accidents near schools result in no injuries, only 6.9 percent of pedestrian collisions end without injury.

Marek Sibal, a data analyst at DataFriends, noted that children under the age of 15 are responsible for more than half of the accidents involving pedestrians, with those aged eight to ten being the most frequent. Among pedestrian collisions, nearly eighty percent result in light injuries, approximately twelve percent result in serious injuries, and 1.4 percent are fatal. The primary cause identified for three-quarters of these accidents is improper driving, such as lack of attention, incorrect turning, or reversing.
