Overview

Data and safety officials report an increase in traffic risks associated with the start of the school year. In the Czech Republic, analysis from the Portál nehod project shows that accidents near schools rise by ten percent in September compared to the yearly average. Between 2010 and 2025, 76,022 accidents occurred within a 100-meter radius of 9,833 schools and kindergartens. While most incidents involve vehicles or cyclists, pedestrian collisions are notably more severe; while 82.5 percent of all accidents near schools result in no injuries, only 6.9 percent of pedestrian collisions end without injury. Children under 15 are responsible for over half of pedestrian-involved accidents, with those aged eight to ten being the most frequent. Data analyst Marek Sibal noted that three-quarters of these accidents are caused by improper driving, such as lack of attention or incorrect turning.

In British Columbia, ICBC reports that collision risks involving minors are 37% higher in September than the monthly average, noting that minors are more than twice as likely to be involved in collisions during morning and afternoon commutes. Annually, three children die and 365 are injured from crashes while walking or biking in the province. In response, ICBC’s road safety team is partnering with police and Speed Watch volunteers to monitor driving speeds and enforce school zone limits. BC Attorney General Niki Sharma emphasized that drivers must remain cautious due to the “unpredictability of children around traffic.” Standard regulations include a 30 km/h speed limit in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.
