Schufa defends new credit score amid transparency criticism
Schufa is facing criticism following reports from NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung alleging that the credit agency has undermined its transparency initiative. While Schufa introduced a simplified new score in March 2026 designed to be easily understood by consumers, investigations suggest the company continues to use more complex, specialized scoring models for corporate clients that are not visible to the public via the Schufa app.
Specifically, reports indicate that a mortgage score has been utilized for long-term real estate loans since summer 2025. This score is calculated differently than the new main score and is not accessible to consumers in their app. Additionally, corporate clients can purchase aggregated credit information and access a pool of up to 40 additional credit criteria, which may influence lending decisions without being reflected in the consumer-facing score.
Schufa has defended its practices, stating it never promised to offer only a single score. The agency aims to reduce its approximately 50 existing scores to a few core models by 2028, with the new central score expected to represent 80 percent of all scores by that time. Consumer protection groups, including the Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (VZBV), have criticized the discrepancy, arguing that the lack of visibility into these secondary scores negates the intended benefits of the transparency offensive.
