Schufa credit scoring transparency controversy

Overview

Investigations by Süddeutsche Zeitung and NDR have revealed that Schufa, Germany’s primary credit agency, has been utilizing a specialized mortgage score for long-term real estate loans since summer 2025.

This scoring method is calculated differently than the new main score introduced in March 2026 as part of a transparency initiative. While Schufa marketed this new system as a way for consumers to see all criteria and weights, the mortgage score remains invisible to users within the Schufa app.

Additionally, corporate clients can purchase aggregated consumer data that may influence credit and contract decisions without being reflected in the scores visible to consumers. Schufa has stated its intention to consolidate its approximately 50 existing credit scores into fewer models, aiming for the new main score to represent 80 percent of scores by 2028. Consumer advocates, including the Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (VZBV), have criticized these practices, questioning the effectiveness of the transparency initiative if undisclosed scores continue to impact financial decisions.
