Scientific expeditions launch in Antarctica featuring wind-powered technology and female researchers

New scientific endeavors are underway in Antarctica, highlighting diverse approaches to polar research. The 45th Brazilian Antarctic Operation (OPERANTAR XLV) has commenced with the departure of the vessels Almirante Maximiano and Ary Rongel from Rio de Janeiro. This mission involves over 200 military personnel and researchers supporting 29 research projects. Notably, female researchers are playing a prominent role, including Captain Valéria Faria, who is investigating how the Antarctic environment affects the psychophysiological parameters of crew members and station personnel.

In a separate initiative, Spanish explorer Ramón Larramendi is leading the Wind Sled Antarctica 2026-2027 expedition. This project aims to traverse approximately 3,400 kilometers across the continent over 80 days without using fossil fuels. The expedition utilizes a unique wind-powered sled inspired by Inuit techniques, employing traction kites and solar energy to transport scientific instruments. The mission intends to conduct 16 investigations into ice, climate change, and polar ecosystems, traveling from the Novolazarevskaya base to the Concordia base.
