Scientific research campaign begins in San Matías Gulf
A new scientific campaign has launched in the San Matías Gulf to monitor the evolution of hake and other commercial species. Researchers from CIMAS are conducting a 12-day expedition aboard the Mar Argentino vessel to gather data essential for managing fishery resources and planning future economic activities.
The REDE 2026 campaign includes surveys of fish populations and studies of environmental conditions within the Gulf. This initiative follows previous studies in 2022 and 2024, which tracked biomass levels. While the 2024 campaign showed a significant recovery in hake biomass to an estimated 25,706 tons, levels remained at approximately half of historical reference values.
Río Negro Governor Alberto Weretilneck stated that the research is a key component of provincial environmental protection policies, which include monitoring energy projects and maintaining a permanent state presence to ensure economic growth is compatible with marine conservation.
