Scientific research examines effects of breathwork and sauna use

Recent scientific studies have explored how specific physical practices like breathwork and sauna use affect human physiology and mental states.

Researchers using magnetic resonance imaging found that intensive circular breathing techniques, often used in breathwork for stress relief, can cause a 45 percent decrease in blood flow to the cerebral cortex. This significant drop in perfusion in the gray matter may explain the altered perceptions and emotional shifts experienced during these sessions, even though oxygen levels remain sufficient for basic brain function.

Similarly, research into sauna use highlights its physiological impact, such as vasodilation and increased heart rate as the body attempts to regulate temperature. While sauna use is linked to relaxation and potential cardiovascular benefits, experts note that long-term health conclusions are still being studied, as many current findings rely on self-reported data influenced by lifestyle factors like diet and exercise.
