Scientific research explores the causes of vivid fever dreams

Scientific research is exploring why fever often leads to vivid and disturbing dreams, commonly referred to as ‘fever dreams.’ Studies indicate that these dreams are significantly more bizarre than typical dreaming, with one study finding that fever-induced dreams contained 58 percent more strange elements, such as moving walls, distorted proportions, or massive creatures.

Michael Schredl, a sleep researcher at the Central Institute of Mental Health at Heidelberg University, has investigated these phenomena. Researchers suggest that elevated body temperature may disrupt cognitive processes, including memory, attention, and information processing, which in turn affects the brain's ability to regulate imagery during sleep.

Interestingly, physical sensations of heat often manifest directly within the dream narrative. For instance, heat-related themes appeared in approximately 10 percent of dreams among feverish subjects, compared to only 2.22 percent in non-febrile individuals. While the connection between physical temperature and dream content is evident, the exact neurological mechanisms remain a subject of ongoing study, as direct brain activity during feverish sleep has not yet been fully mapped.
