Scientific research on fever dreams

Research into ‘fever dreams’ indicates that dreams experienced during elevated body temperatures are more intense, unusual, and negative than typical dreams. Early studies analyzing dream reports found that these experiences often involve illogical environmental changes, such as distorted objects or rooms changing size, alongside sensations related to health or temperature.

Subsequent scientific investigations have quantified these phenomena, noting that fever-induced dreams may contain 58 percent more strange elements—such as massive creatures or moving walls—than normal dreams. Researchers, including Michael Schredl from the Central Institute of Mental Health at Heidelberg University, suggest that increased body temperature may disrupt cognitive processes like memory, attention, and information processing, which affects the brain’s ability to regulate imagery during sleep.

Physical sensations of heat also appear more frequently in the dream narratives of febrile individuals. While the connection between physical temperature and dream content is evident, the specific neurological mechanisms remain under study as researchers work to map direct brain activity during feverish sleep.
