Scientific studies link physical fitness and genetics to mental health outcomes
Recent scientific studies have highlighted different factors influencing mental health and emotional resilience. Research published in Acta Psychologica by the Federal University of Goiás and the University of Zurich suggests a strong link between cardiorespiratory fitness and anxiety management. In a study of 40 young adults, those with below-average fitness levels were 775% more likely to reach peak anxiety levels when exposed to distressing images compared to those with better physical condition.
Separately, research from the Karolinska Institute published in Nature Human Behaviour examined the relationship between screen time and mental health in adolescents. Analyzing over 21,000 Swedish twins, researchers found that while adolescents spending more than six hours daily on interactive screen activities faced a higher risk of depression or anxiety diagnoses, much of this association is explained by genetic predisposition and family environment rather than screen use alone.
