Scientific studies reveal genetic and microbial drivers of skin aging

Recent scientific studies have identified new biological mechanisms driving skin aging. Researchers at IRB Barcelona discovered that aging reprograms the genetic activity of the skin, promoting persistent inflammation. This process involves two proteins, BMAL1 and YAP, which change how they interact to increase the activity of inflammatory genes in the epidermis, reducing the skin's ability to regenerate and maintain its barrier.

Complementary research from the Jackson Laboratory and Duke University suggests that skin aging is also driven by changes in the skin microbiome. The study characterizes the skin as an aging ecosystem where beneficial microorganisms decrease while potentially harmful ones proliferate. While current experimental therapies focus on inflammatory diseases like atopic dermatitis, researchers suggest that modulating the skin microbiome could eventually offer pathways to promote healthy aging, though further understanding of the human skin ecosystem is required.
