Recent scientific studies have provided new insights into how the body manages sleep deprivation and biological aging.
A study led by researchers at McGill University found that short bursts of moderate-to-high intensity physical exercise can be as effective as a 90-minute nap in helping the brain cope with the effects of sleep loss. In a study involving 54 healthy young adults kept awake for 30 hours, those who exercised or napped performed approximately 22 percent better on memory tests than those who did neither. While napping appears to aid brain recovery and information retention, exercise helps the brain use remaining resources more efficiently. Researchers noted that exercise is a practical temporary measure but cannot replace adequate sleep.
In a separate investigation into biological aging, researchers in the United States analyzed blood samples from 3,227 individuals to understand how epigenetic clocks function. These mathematical models, based on DNA methylation, are used to assess how quickly a person is aging biologically. The study revealed that different epigenetic clocks are linked to distinct physiological markers; some relate to energy use and cell growth, while others are tied to immune activity and inflammation. These findings may assist scientists in selecting more precise methods for studying the links between aging, disease, and physical decline.
