Overview

Scientific research has increasingly focused on the physiological consequences of sleep disturbances and their relationship to biological aging.

Initial findings presented at the European Academy of Neurology 2025 congress established that frequent nightmares—occurring at least once a week—are associated with a more than threefold increase in the risk of premature death. Research from McGill University suggests that short bursts of moderate-to-high intensity exercise may serve as a temporary measure to help the brain cope with sleep deprivation, performing similarly to a 90-minute nap in memory tests.

Additionally, large-scale analysis of blood samples has provided deeper insight into epigenetic clocks. By studying DNA methylation, researchers have determined that different mathematical models for assessing biological age relate to distinct physiological processes, such as immune activity, inflammation, energy use, and cell growth.
