Scientists develop methods to regrow human teeth

Scientists are working on regenerative dentistry approaches to stimulate the body to regrow teeth or biological tooth structures, rather than relying solely on fillings, crowns, or implants.

Researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago, led by Professor Anne George, are investigating proteins involved in dentin formation to develop treatments that allow teeth to repair themselves. Meanwhile, a team at the University of Washington is exploring “living fillings” by using stem cells to create enamel and dentin. Their long-term goal is the development of a fully laboratory-grown tooth.

These advancements aim to address the limitations of current dental solutions and the broader health implications of oral hygiene, as gum disease has been linked to cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, and potentially Alzheimer’s disease.
