Scilla waterspout hits Calabria coast, lifting beach equipment
A waterspout formed in the Strait of Messina reached the coast of Scilla in the Calabria region of Italy on Friday morning. The vortex moved rapidly from the sea toward the Marina Grande beach.
As the waterspout made landfall, strong winds lifted beach equipment, including umbrellas and sunbeds, into the air. Tourists and swimmers were forced to flee the shoreline to find safety. While the event caused material damage to beach property, no injuries have been reported.
The phenomenon occurred amid a period of meteorological instability in southern Italy, where warm sea temperatures and cold upper-atmosphere air have created conditions favorable for such intense rotating air currents.
