Waterspout activity along the Italian coast

A series of waterspout events occurred along the Italian coast during late summer 2026.

In late August, a waterspout was observed in the Gulf of Salerno near Maiori on the Amalfi Coast. The phenomenon, characterized by a column of water and condensation, was visible to beachgoers and prompted warnings regarding sudden wind gusts and maritime safety.

By early September, meteorological instability continued in southern Italy. A waterspout formed in the Strait of Messina and moved toward the coast of Scilla in Calabria. This event caused material damage by lifting beach equipment, such as umbrellas and sunbeds, into the air. While tourists were forced to flee the shoreline, no injuries were reported.
