Scotland A9 crash kills driver, closes road for 12 hours

A serious road traffic collision occurred on the A9 near South Birnam, south of Dunkeld in Perth and Kinross on the morning of 31 July 2026. Emergency services responded to a crash involving a grey Audi A4 and a white Scania HGV at around 06:10. The 46‑year‑old driver of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene, while the lorry driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The incident forced the A9 to be closed in both directions for more than 12 hours, causing major delays for commuters. Traffic Scotland advised motorists to use alternative routes. The road reopened around 18:30 after investigators recovered the vehicles and completed safety checks. Police Scotland appealed for witnesses and dash‑cam footage to aid the ongoing investigation, providing an incident number for contact.
