European travel trends shift toward short microvacations
European travel trends are shifting toward ‘microvacations’ for 2026, characterized by shorter trips of four to six nights. According to the European Commission for Tourism (CET), these brief escapes are now surpassing long-duration holidays among Europeans as a preferred way to travel.
This trend is largely driven by economic factors and rising costs. With hotel prices in Spain averaging 157 euros per night in July—a 5.9% increase from the previous year—travelers are opting to fractionate their leave to keep total spending below the 1,000 euro threshold. Additionally, 76% of Europeans are adjusting their travel dates to avoid extreme summer heat, leading to increased interest in rural tourism during the spring and autumn.
Data from Trip.com shows a 73% year-on-year increase in short-distance flight bookings in Europe during the first half of the year, with average trip durations ranging between 2.9 and 3.8 days.
