SCP Foundation community raises licensing concerns over A24 film

SCP International, representing various language wikis of the SCP Foundation, has issued a joint statement expressing concern regarding the upcoming film ‘V/H/S SCP’. The project, produced by Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios in collaboration with A24, is part of the ‘V/H/S’ horror anthology series.

The primary concern involves the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (CC BY-SA 3.0) license that governs SCP Foundation content. This license requires that any derivative works also be shared under the same terms. SCP International noted that none of the involved film studios have contacted the wiki communities, and they expressed uncertainty about how a major commercial film distribution would comply with these open-source requirements.

While A24 stated that the film is an ‘homage to the community that created this world’ and does not intend to claim exclusive rights to the SCP universe, SCP International argued that the studio has not yet provided a concrete plan to respect the licensing conditions. The group also distinguished this situation from the film ‘The Backrooms’, noting that while ‘The Backrooms’ originated as a non-attributed internet meme, the SCP Foundation was established specifically under a collaborative, licensed framework.
