A24 SCP Foundation film development and licensing dispute

Overview

A24 announced it has acquired worldwide rights to produce a feature film based on the SCP Foundation, a collaborative internet-based horror and science-fiction universe. The project, titled ‘V/H/S: SCP’, is being developed in partnership with Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios for a planned 2027 theatrical release.

Following the announcement, SCP International, representing various language wikis of the foundation, issued a statement expressing concern regarding the project’s compliance with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (CC BY-SA 3.0) license. The group noted that the involved studios have not contacted the wiki communities and expressed uncertainty regarding how a major commercial film would adhere to open-source requirements.

While A24 described the film as an ‘homage to the community that created this world’ and stated it does not intend to claim exclusive rights to the universe, SCP International argued that the studio has yet to provide a concrete plan to respect existing licensing conditions.
