Screen time and video gaming impact adolescent brain development

Recent studies have highlighted the impact of excessive screen time and video gaming on adolescent brain development and mental health. Research involving brain scans shows a link between prolonged video gaming and the thinning of the cerebral cortex, specifically in the frontal and parietal regions. While cortical thinning is a natural part of brain maturation, excessive gaming may accelerate this process unevenly, affecting areas responsible for attention and self-control.

The type of content consumed plays a significant role. Adolescents playing single-player games showed more visible structural changes in areas associated with language and socialization compared to those playing multiplayer games. Furthermore, frequent exposure to violent or adult-oriented content is linked to thinning in brain networks responsible for emotional processing and social cue interpretation.

Regarding mental health, research suggests a correlation between sedentary screen time and increased depression risks. For adolescents, the risk of depressive symptoms tends to rise when sedentary behavior exceeds approximately 3.7 hours per day. Experts note that while these associations exist, factors such as sleep quality, physical activity, and social relationships also influence these outcomes, emphasizing the need for a healthy digital balance rather than strict prohibitions.
