Screwworm infestations rise in Puebla and Tlaxcala, Mexico

The National Service for Health, Safety and Agro-Food Quality (SENASICA) reported that Cuetzalan del Progreso in Puebla recorded 23 active cases of the screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), the highest count in the state for the epidemiological week 22 of 2026.

In Tlaxcala, officials documented a total of 11 cumulative cases, with four currently active in the municipalities of Xaltocan, Contla de Juan Cuamatzi and the state capital. The active cases involve ovines in Xaltocan, a canine in Contla de Juan Cuamatzi and one animal in Tlaxcala city. Authorities urge livestock owners to inspect wounds daily, maintain hygiene, seek veterinary care promptly and report suspected infestations to curb further spread.
