Screwworm infestations surge in Panama, United States and Guatemala

Health authorities in Panama reported that 55 people have been affected by myiasis caused by the screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) this year, marking the highest regional incidence and prompting intensified public‑health campaigns.

In the United States, the USDA confirmed 32 livestock cases of the New World screwworm, primarily in Texas, and outlined ongoing veterinary treatment and surveillance efforts to prevent further spread.

Guatemala’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) announced that more than 245,000 animals were inspected during the first quarter of 2026 as part of a national program to control the parasite, including checks of transport units and farmer training.
