Mexico manages cattle maggot outbreaks across multiple states

The cattle maggot (gusano barrenador) continues to affect various Mexican states, impacting livestock health and the potential for cattle exports to the United States.

In the State of Mexico, authorities report 19 active cases and 503 cumulative cases in 2026, though 60 municipalities remain free of the pest. Sanitary barriers using biological attractants have been installed to interrupt the fly's reproductive cycle, preventing an estimated 29 million larvae from hatching.

In Sonora, the situation is more widespread with approximately 59 cases across 11 municipalities, including the capital, Hermosillo. The highest concentrations are in Álamos and Huatabampo. Control measures include the weekly release of over 12 million sterile flies.

Tamaulipas reports 24 active cases, primarily concentrated in Aldama and Soto la Marina. Authorities are focusing on preventive field work and the potential release of sterile flies to protect the border with the United States.

In Coahuila, the resumption of cattle exports to the U.S. may be delayed by up to four months as producers work to meet technical and sanitary protocols, including tuberculosis testing, following the prolonged suspension of trade.
