Sea turtle conservation and nesting trends in Italy

A Caretta caretta sea turtle, named Flavia, was rescued in an Italian marine protected area after becoming trapped in a net and surrounded by plastic waste. The turtle was spotted by a local boater, Marco Testa, who alerted authorities. Following a rescue operation conducted with the Coast Guard, Flavia was transferred to the Turtle Point at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Portici. Specialists report her condition is stable, despite a fin injury caused by the netting.

Separately, reports on Mediterranean sea turtle nesting indicate a slowdown in activity this year. As of the first week of August, approximately 280 nests have been recorded along Italian coasts, a decrease from the peak of over 700 nests in 2025. Experts note this fluctuation is a natural biological cycle, as females often require two to three years to replenish energy reserves between nesting seasons. While Italy remains a primary nesting area due to warming waters, threats such as mechanical beach cleaning and light pollution continue to pose risks to the species.
