Sea turtle conservation efforts highlighted in Venezuela and Panama

Conservation efforts for sea turtles have been highlighted through recent events in Venezuela and Panama. In Cata Bay, Venezuela, 86 Caretta caretta hatchlings successfully reached the sea following the discovery of a nest. The Sociedad Científica Henri Pittier reported that the successful hatching was the result of coordinated efforts between government agencies, environmental organizations, and local beachgoers to protect the nest from domestic animals and human interference.

In Panama, the tenth annual Turtle Fair commenced at Mata Oscura beach in Veraguas. The event featured the release of sea turtles and aimed to combine marine conservation with local folklore. The Fundación Agua y Tierra noted that Mata Oscura is a critical site for four different sea turtle species, including a connection to the Caretta caretta populations in Coiba National Park. During the fair, several nests were identified, some of which were relocated to nurseries for protection.
