Sea turtle conservation efforts intensify in Honduras and Mexico

Conservation efforts are underway to protect sea turtles during their nesting seasons in Honduras and Mexico.

In Marcovia, Honduras, authorities have implemented a protection period from September 1 to September 25 under Article 167-2024. This initiative, coordinated by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) and the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Digepesca) alongside local municipalities and environmental agencies, involves setting up turtle camps to safeguard nests and eggs. Nighttime surveillance operations are also being conducted to protect the species during peak spawning hours.

In Playa del Carmen, Mexico, local authorities, biologists, and fishing cooperatives have reported the successful release of 163,000 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea. The strategy includes beach camps where specialists and biologists monitor environmental factors, such as gas leaks, that could threaten the hatchlings. Environmental officials have issued warnings against unauthorized human contact, noting that touching or disturbing the turtles can jeopardize their survival and conservation efforts.
