Sea turtle Samuele released after successful surgery in Italy
A young Caretta caretta sea turtle, named Samuele, has been released back into the wild following a successful medical intervention. The incident occurred on August 13, 2026, off the coast of Scanzano, when the turtle accidentally swallowed a fishing hook that became lodged in its esophagus.
Following immediate contact from the fisherman, the turtle was initially treated by the WWF Bosco Pantano Marine Turtle Recovery Center in Policoro. It was subsequently transferred to the Sea Turtle Clinic at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Bari. There, a surgical team led by Professor Di Bello successfully removed the hook.
After a period of recovery and rehabilitation, Samuele was released to swim freely at the Marina di Ginosa beach on October 26, 2026.
