Caretta caretta sea turtle rescues in Italy
Overview
In Sicily, a Caretta caretta sea turtle named Adelina was released into the Mediterranean Sea at Punta Secca. Adelina had been rescued in September by the Catania Maritime Directorate after being found in distress. She underwent medical treatment and monitoring at the Sicilian Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute before her release during a local maritime tradition event.
In a separate instance, a young turtle named Samuele was released at Marina di Ginosa beach following medical intervention. Samuele had swallowed a fishing hook in August off the coast of Scanzano. After initial treatment at the WWF Bosco Pantano Marine Turtle Recovery Center, a surgical team at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Bari successfully removed the hook, allowing for the turtle's eventual rehabilitation and release.
