Sea turtles arrive for mass nesting in Mexico

Sea turtle nesting seasons are underway across various Mexican coastal regions, including Michoacán and Baja California Sur. In Michoacán, the beaches of Ixtapilla in the Aquila municipality are experiencing a massive arrival of olive ridley turtles for spawning. Key sanctuaries in the state include Colola for black turtles, Maruata for olive ridleys, and Mexiquillo for leatherback turtles.

In Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, authorities reported the arrival of approximately 140 olive ridley turtles at Playa El Médano. To prevent illegal looting or destruction, the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina) coordinated with Profepa, Conanp, and local hotel sectors to secure approximately 10,000 eggs. These eggs have been moved to turtle camps under established protocols to ensure successful incubation and the eventual release of hatchlings.
