Sea Watch 5 detained by Italy following Mediterranean rescue
The Italian government has imposed a 45-day administrative detention and a 7,500 euro fine on the German rescue vessel Sea Watch 5. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the sanctions, stating the vessel violated legal obligations by failing to coordinate its sea rescue operations with competent state authorities.
The incident stems from a rescue operation on August 13 in international waters, where the crew saved six people. Sea Watch contends that while they notified Italy and neighboring European countries, they intentionally did not contact the Libyan maritime rescue coordination center, describing it as a “puppet authority” used to legitimize human traffickers. The NGO further reported that following the rescue, an unidentified Libyan vessel approached and threatened the crew with a firearm.
During the four-day journey to Naples, the crew also documented eight bodies in the water. Sea Watch has criticized the Italian government's actions as an obstruction of emergency humanitarian aid, arguing that the decision criminalizes life-saving work. The Italian government maintains that rescue activities must be managed by states rather than private organizations.
