Nolan Wells' Death Confirmed After Missing July 4 Search on Mississippi's Horn Island

Eighteen‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells, a wide‑receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, vanished on July 4 2026 while spending Independence Day on Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was last seen in blue swim‑trunks, sunglasses and no shirt, talking to a girl on the island’s north end.

A large multi‑agency search was launched, involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy and numerous volunteers. On the morning of July 6 a park ranger found a body near the northwest shore of Horn Island; authorities said it matched Wells’ description. "There is no reason to believe it is not him," said Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd. Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, later confirmed the identification, posting, "We are absolutely devastated."

The sheriff’s office has not ruled out foul play but has suggested drowning as a possible cause and stated there is currently no evidence of a crime. The family, seeking a transparent investigation, has retained civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, who urged investigators to pursue the case with urgency and transparency. The incident has sparked online discussion about racial dynamics, as Wells was the only Black person in his group.

Investigators continue to interview witnesses and request any video or other information from the island.
