Scarlett Salice disappearance: New leads emerge in Black Forest search

New developments have emerged in the six-year disappearance of Scarlett Salice, a 26-year-old hiker who vanished in the Southern Black Forest in September 2020. During a recent search operation in the Wehratal, approximately twelve search dogs from the organization ‘Finderwille’ reportedly alerted to a scent near the Wildensteinfelsen, a difficult-to-access rocky area.

In addition to the canine alerts, police are currently examining a zipper found near a Schluchtensteig parking lot to determine if it belonged to Salice’s backpack. To assist the investigation, members of a support group provided police with an identical red backpack for forensic comparison.

However, authorities and experts have expressed significant skepticism regarding the new leads. Police spokespeople noted that specialized search dogs typically cannot detect human decomposition scents after two years, making a six-year-old scent unlikely. Furthermore, a forestry official stated that the area had been extensively surveyed by climbers and workers three years ago without any findings. Experts from the Federal Association of Rescue Dogs also questioned the reliability of the scent, suggesting that individual scents do not persist in the wild for such a duration.
