Anak Krakatau eruption triggers search for eight missing in Sunda Strait

Search operations are underway in the Sunda Strait for eight individuals missing since September 7, 2026, following an explosive eruption of Anak Krakatau. The missing group includes five journalists and three crew members of the speedboat Arupadhatu 1.

Basarnas has extended the search mission through September 17, 2026, expanding the search area to include the Bengkulu region due to predicted ocean currents. The operation involves approximately 647 personnel and dozens of vessels, including KRI naval ships and various patrol boats. The search covers an area of roughly 6,649 square nautical miles.

The eruption, which saw ash plumes reaching altitudes of 15,000 meters, caused the temporary closure of eight airports across Java and Sumatra and disrupted thousands of flights. Scientific analysis by BRIN indicates that the magma characteristics of Anak Krakatau differ from older Krakatau samples, specifically noting the presence of olivine.

Banten Governor Andra Soni has requested that Basarnas consider extending the search beyond the standard seven-day window to accommodate the families' wishes. Meanwhile, organizations like Baznas RI are providing humanitarian aid to the families of the missing journalists.
