United States Halloween spending projected to reach record $13.5 billion
Halloween spending in the United States is projected to reach record levels, with the National Retail Federation estimating total spending could hit $13.5 billion this year. This follows a $13.1 billion peak in 2025.
In Texas, consumer trends show a shift in preferences, with Sour Patch Kids expected to become the most popular candy for trick-or-treating, surpassing long-time favorites like Reese’s Pieces and Skittles. Retailers in the state are also seeing a trend toward larger, more expensive animatronic decorations.
Economic pressures are also impacting the holiday. Inflation and rising ingredient costs for cocoa and sugar have contributed to an 8.1% increase in candy and chewing gum prices between August 2025 and August 2026. Consequently, consumers are facing higher costs for essentials such as costumes, decorations, and treats, with parents expected to spend an average of $445 on holiday celebrations.
