Bolivia investigates police officers over Marset operation irregularities
Bolivian authorities are investigating several high-ranking police officers following allegations of theft during the operation to capture Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset. Prosecutors are examining whether officers misappropriated valuables, including large sums of money, jewelry, and electronics, from Marset’s residence.
Captain Guillermo Ruiz Guzmán has been ordered into six months of preventive detention in Viacha. He faces charges of embezzlement, breach of duty, theft, extortion, and passive bribery. During the investigation, authorities discovered four empty suitcases in a police facility in La Paz, which reportedly correspond to the luggage removed from Marset’s home.
Other officers under investigation include Colonel Juan Marcelo Ferrufino Rojas, who has also been ordered into six months of preventive detention, as well as Colonel Oscar Fernando Moreno and Lieutenant Colonel Erick Correa. While Moreno and Correa are currently in hiding and subject to migration alerts, the investigation continues to seek the whereabouts of the missing items.
In a separate criminal development, authorities in Santa Cruz captured Engri Junior de Almeida Maia, a Brazilian national known as the ‘Pablo Escobar of Goiás’. Maia is accused of involvement in dozens of murders in Brazil and Bolivia and allegedly led the ‘Amigos del Estado’ group, which provided logistical support and security to Marset’s criminal organization.
